Cafe Scientifique
Monday 1st September at 7pm

Amazing Revelations from Evolutionary Biology

by Dr. Frank Ryan Consultant Physician, Sheffield PCT, and Honorary Research Fellow,
Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Sheffield

Frank discusses four themes at this Café. The first will relate to a very
surprising new discovery about the human brain that links to his redefinition of
HIV-1 as an “aggressive symbiont”. The second will link James Lovelock’s
Gaia with our present concerns about global warming. The third will examine
Frank’s contribution to one facet of Lynn Margulis’s theory for the origin of
nucleated cells and link it both to the dance of the chromosomes in mitosis and
the human eye. The fourth will link the current race to create the first truly
artificial (and thus entirely alien) life form in the lab to the cover image of his
science-based thriller, The Doomsday Genie.

Sharpen your interest and knowledge of science in an informal and friendly
atmosphere. Café Scienti ique is an opportunity for all members of the public to
meet practising scientists. Take part in debate/discussion around a drink or
plate of food at the Showroom Bar.

Admission is FREE, no need to sign up.
If you are visually/hearing impaired or have other special access needs and would like
to attend the event, please get in touch with us in advance, and we will try our best to
arrange for help to make the event accessible to you.

Format: Generally the Café begins at 7.00pm in the restaurant area of the
Showroom. We begin with a short presentation of about 20 minutes from a guest
speaker, followed by a break to allow people to refresh their glasses and think of
questions they may wish to ask. During the break there are also small group
discussions before a larger discussion takes place which can get quite lively! For
