In upstate New York, two men (Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper), and later, their sons must deal with the unforeseen consequences of their actions. The film tells three linear stories: Luke (Gosling), a motorcycle stunt rider who supports his family through a life of crime; Avery (Cooper), an ambitious policeman who confronts his corrupt police department; and two troubled teenagers (Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan) who explore the aftermath of Luke and Avery's actions fifteen years later.
The cast also includes Eva Mendes (who after this film ended up marrying Gosling), Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Bruce Greenwood, and Mahershala Ali. It marked Gosling and Cianfrance’s second collaboration, after their work on Blue Valentine.
